Altiero Spinelli (1907-1986) può essere considerato il padre dell’ Europa moderna, sorta dalla distruzione della Seconda Guerra Mondiale.
Altri personaggi avevano provato a dar vita al continente europeo: uno di loro, Carlo Magno, aveva unificato l’ attuale Europa Occidentale attraverso il Sacro Romano Impero.
Ispirato dagli ideali di libertà e fratellanza, Altiero Spinelli aderì al Partito Comunista Italiano nel 1924, nonostante le persecuzioni dei fascisti.
Nel 1927 Spinelli fu arrestato e deportato sull’ isola di Ventotene dove, assieme ad Ernesto Rossi ed Eugenio Colorni, firmò il “Manifesto di un’ Europa Libera ed Unita” ( o “Manifesto di Ventotene”).
Scagionato quando Mussolini fu arrestato, Spinelli prese parte anche alla Resistenza e rimase in politica fino alla sua morte.
Il gesto di Altiero Spinelli è stato eroico ed esemplare: figlio di un socialista, ancora molto giovane abbandonò parenti ed amici per intraprendere un lungo e difficile percorso: quello che un giorno avrebbe realizzato.

Altiero Spinelli (1907-1986) can be considered the forefather of the modern Europe, risen from the destruction of the World War II.
Other great personalities had tried to give life to the European continent: one of them, Charles the Great, had established his Sacred Roman Empire all over West Europe.
Inspired by ideals of freedom and brotherhood, Altiero Spinelli took part to the “Communist Italian Party” in 1924, in spite of the Fascist persecution.
In 1927 he was arrested and deported to Ventotene Island, where he signed the “Manifesto of a Free and United Europe” (or “Manifesto of Ventotene”) with Ernesto Rossi and Eugenio Colorni.
Exculpated when Mussolini was arrested, Spinelli partecipated also to the Resistence and remained in policy until his death.
Altiero Spinelli’s gesture has been heroic and exemplary: son of a socialist, still very young he abandoned his family and friends to take up a long and hard route: the one he would have realized one day.
